Coffee farmers in Kenya to give voice on new regulations

Coffee farmers in Kenya, and other stakeholders, are to make their suggestions on the new coffee regulations that were deemed unlawful.

In July, the High Court annulled the regulations proposed by a  task-force appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as they had been passed without public participation. The Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Willy Bet, was directed to ensure the new rules are passed within 30 days of the first sitting of the new Parliament.

Consequently, the Agriculture and Food Authority has invited coffee farmers in Kenya, through cooperative societies, marketers and millers to make their suggestions on the regulations on Monday, 23rd October, 2017. Invited stakeholders will make proposals in person or through written submissions.

The Agriculture and Food Authority was created four years ago after consolidation of previous cash crop regulatory bodies.

The Coffee farmers in Kenya have seen their trade bedeviled by mismanagement and collusion against farmers interest. Here is an in-depth review of the situation.
