Smart Villages Energy Innovation Challenge is on for the 2nd time in 2016. It’s open to East African entrepreneurs with an idea using off-grid energy in rural villages. The selected applicants will attend training in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Smart Villages Energy Innovation Challenge is running for the second time in 2016. The Challenge is organized by Smart Villages, in collaboration with Cambridge Development Initiative. Young East African entrepreneurs with inventive business ideas using off-grid energy are being sought out.
Five finalist teams will be selected to participate in 2016’s Smart Villages Energy Innovation Challenge. They will undergo a 7 week training course courtesy of DAREntreprisers. Other gains include funding, on application, certification and networking opportunities.
The competition is open to East African students or recent graduates under the age of 30. What is aimed at is creating opportunities in rural villages by addressing the challenge of energy. The winner will receive $3000 in capital.

- Mobile phone based businesses
- Agricultural processing/storage innovation
- Waste management and sanitation
- Improvements to education and healthcare
Smart Villages Energy Innovation Challenge will be held from 29th July to 17th September, 2016, in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.
