A self-help group of drivers and conductors in Kitengela has taken a major step in transforming their livelihoods by acquiring a minibus for commuter transport.
The Ornamental Self-Help Group, consisting of 13 members, celebrated the milestone as they officially received their new matatu, purchased through a chama investment loan from Equity Bank’s Kitengela branch. Speaking during the handover ceremony, the group’s Chairman, Samuel Mungai, expressed gratitude to Equity for supporting their entrepreneurial vision.
“Equity wametuonyesha wanajali maslahi ya customers na wanasikiza shida bila kubagua. Hii matatu tumenunua na loan yao. Hii partnership na Equity ilianza na savings za thao saba tu, around 2018. Kuna officer wao ambaye hutufunza kuhusu pesa, mambo ya ku-deal na madeni, mikopo, bajeti na ku-invest (Equity has shown they care about their customers and listen to our needs. This matatu was purchased through their loan. Our partnership with Equity began in 2018 with just Ksh 7,000 in savings. Their officers trained us on financial literacy, debt management, loans, budgeting, and investment),” shared Mungai.
He further highlighted the discipline and commitment of the group members in saving, especially during tough economic times, adding, “Tutaendelea kushikana na Equity mpaka kila msee kwa hii chama akue na matatu yake (We are determined to strengthen this relationship until each member of our chama owns their own matatu).”
Empowering Communities Through Financial Literacy
Equity Bank Kenya’s General Manager for Pamoja Banking, Benignas Muema, commended the group’s determination and discipline, emphasizing the bank’s role in empowering self-help and community groups.
“As we celebrate the success of this chama, we encourage other groups—whether women, youth, or self-help organizations—to visit our branches for partnerships in financial literacy and entrepreneurship training. Our goal is to support customers, provide flexible financing options, promote a savings culture, and help increase income levels for individuals and businesses,” said Muema during the handover ceremony, as he handed the keys to the group.
Driving Economic Growth Through Transport
Equity Kitengela Branch Business Growth Development Manager (BGDM), Winnie Karani, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting businesses in the transport sector.
“Today marks a significant milestone in the progress and growth of this community. Asset financing isn’t just about vehicles, machinery, or equipment; it’s about creating jobs, enhancing livelihoods, and driving economic development,” she noted, while also encouraging other customers to explore Equity’s diverse financial solutions, including working capital options.
A Growing Partnership
The new matatu will join over 80 vehicles operating on the Nairobi-Kitengela route under Rembo Shuttle Services. Joseph Mwangi, CEO of Rembo Shuttle Services, recognized Equity’s vital role in growing transport businesses through partnerships with affiliate groups like Ornamental.
“Equity has been a valued partner, helping us and our affiliate groups expand their fleets. We look forward to further collaboration to enhance transport services and create opportunities for more entrepreneurs,” said Mwangi.
This milestone for Ornamental Self-Help Group serves as an inspiring example of how financial literacy, disciplined savings, and strategic partnerships can empower individuals to transform their lives and contribute to community development.
