M-PESA Foundation Launches Wezesha Mama to Empower Women’s Groups Across Kenya

The M-PESA Foundation has officially launched Wezesha Mama, a new nationwide initiative aimed at uplifting registered women’s groups by providing them with business training, grant opportunities, and digital tools to scale their ventures and improve livelihoods.

The launch took place at Mombasa Sports Club during the ongoing M-PESA Sokoni Festival, marking 15 years of the Foundation’s impact across Kenya.

Wezesha Mama will benefit over 500 women’s groups by offering:

  • Business development and planning support
  • Financial and digital literacy training
  • Branding, marketing, and product improvement guidance
  • Access to grants for top-performing groups

“Wezesha Mama is more than a programme — it’s a movement to equip women-led groups with the tools to succeed. When women thrive, entire communities thrive. We are proud to be starting this journey at the Coast, and expanding it across all 47 counties,” said Nicholas Nganga, Chairman of M-PESA Foundation.

At the end of the 12-month initiative, the top three groups in each of five regions will receive grants of:

  • KES 500,000 (1st place)
  • KES 300,000 (2nd place)
  • KES 200,000 (3rd place)

Additionally, all participating groups will join the M-PESA Mama Network — a nationwide community of women entrepreneurs focused on shared growth and peer-to-peer learning.

Wezesha Mama builds on the Foundation’s previous impactful work with partners such as Hand in Hand East Africa and Rose Women Foundation, which has already supported thousands of women through training and financial access.

This programme is part of the larger M-PESA Sokoni campaign — a two-month celebration under the M-PESA at 18 banner — spotlighting M-PESA’s transformative role in Kenya’s financial and digital progress. The Coastal leg of the celebration will conclude on Saturday, 7th June at the Mombasa Sports Club Grounds.
