Herbusiness entrepreneur of the week is Rita Oyier. She runs a consumer communication agency. We talked to her about her venture. Tell us a bit about your business?

My business, Monar Strategic Limited, is an innovative consumer communication agency. We explore, through insights and consumer collaboration experiments, best ways to achieve your marketing communications agenda with your target audience. We also are keen on layering simple technology with good old marketing styles to give visibility and accuracy to clients. This enables them measure their return and also do more with their client base to stretch the spend beyond tactical campaigns.

How did you raise funds for your business?

I got funding through selling the vision to individual investors and giving them part ownership of the business. They were people who I had worked with and knew my work ethics.

What do you think is the most important thing a start-up needs to be a success?

The single most important thing I believe in this time is to make sure the propositions and products you put out are solving someones problems. The ‘someone’ also needs to want to pay for this product and service, so the solution needs to be Real.

What do you know now that you wish you knew before you started your business?

Partnerships are very crucial and it is never about the money. Managing expenses is critical, how much you make is a tiny matter compared to how much you keep in profit. Numbers are your best friend. Get the best people for the specific roles and dont be an expert where you are struggling.

What advice would you give a young woman who wants to venture into business?

Step out. You will learn by doing. Failure is great, learn from it, fail fast, fail forward, fail better. Those who succeed have one head, one heart and one body, just like you. Go on and enjoy the journey, it refines you.
