Safaricom has launched a transformative tech re-skilling program to empower young Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with essential digital skills, enhancing their employability in the competitive IT sector. This initiative underscores Safaricom’s commitment to fostering inclusivity in the digital age.

Currently in its pilot phase, the program offers a comprehensive 23-week software engineering module delivered at Moringa School. In addition to technical training, participants will receive mentorship and coaching tailored to help them thrive in the tech industry.

“As we strive to become Africa’s leading purpose-driven technology company by 2030, inclusivity remains central to our mission. Persons with disabilities presently comprise 3.3% of our workforce, and through this initiative, we aim to increase this to 3.5%,” said Nyokabi Florence, Chief Human Resources Officer at Safaricom PLC.

The re-skilling programme builds on the success of the IT Bridge Academy, a 2022 initiative in collaboration with partners such as Sight Savers, the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK), Three Talents, Accenture, and CISCO. The IT Bridge Academy provided IT training and practical experience for young job seekers with disabilities passionate about the tech industry.

This initiative aligns with Safaricom’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) strategy, which seeks to integrate inclusivity across all aspects of the organisation—from workforce development to community engagement and customer interaction.
