In a resounding recognition of its environmental commitment, Safaricom has emerged as the triumphant recipient of the Environment Sustainability Award at the prestigious inaugural event organized by Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
Commended for its pioneering strides in integrating climate change initiatives into its business ethos, Safaricom stands out for its innovative approaches and investments in sustainable solutions that fortify the environment, humanity, and profitability alike.

Our business’s triumph is intrinsically tied to the health of our planet, and to that end, we have orchestrated a robust strategy that harmoniously melds green growth and climate-conscious interventions. This strategy not only underscores our responsibility in production and consumption but also underscores our commitment to a harmonious partnership with various stakeholders in environmental stewardship initiatives,” noted Peter Ndegwa, Chief Executive Officer of Safaricom.
Safaricom’s far-reaching endeavors span a diverse array of climate action initiatives. Its collaboration with Kenya Forest Services to nurture the growth of five million trees by 2025 is projected to yield 2,000 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect employment opportunities. This commitment showcases the company’s dedication to fostering sustainable livelihoods alongside environmental stewardship.
Moreover, Safaricom has spearheaded e-waste recycling efforts, repurposing a remarkable 913 tonnes of electronic waste. A standout achievement is the successful recycling of 88.1% of its solid waste during the FY 2022. The enterprise has taken momentous strides toward its goal of becoming a net-zero emissions entity by 2050 by solarizing approximately 1,400 of its network sites, thereby curbing carbon dioxide emissions.
The accolades don’t end there. Safaricom’s laudable Sustainable Energy Programme, exemplified by the Biogas Project, has played a transformative role. Over 57 biogas units have been established in the Eburu community conservation, extending its positive impact to Naivasha and Nyandarua regions, empowering local farmers and promoting renewable energy adoption.
Further meriting acknowledgment is the commendable dam rehabilitation and solarization endeavor in Nyalani, Kinango Sub County, Kwale County.
At the heart of the recognition lies the remarkable fact that Safaricom emerged victorious from a competitive field, edging out 69 other companies in the KEPSA roundtable. This event served as a platform for Corporate CEOs and Business Leaders to align on priorities for the forthcoming Africa Climate Summit, all while championing and celebrating businesses that are at the forefront of climate action.
